The oPhone – one of the most revolutionary and important smartphones on the market – celebrated seven years of existence yesterday. Apple introduced the device in January 2007, during MacWorld, but the device only hit the market on June 29 of the same year.

Apple created the original iPhone in a secret collaboration with AT&T for 30 months, in a project that consumed 150 million reais. The phone initially went on sale only in the United States at 6 am on the 29th, and hundreds of lines formed across the country at store doors. Success was instantaneous.

Since then, much has changed. The original iPhone did not have the third-party apps as there are today: it was only sold with the programs pre-installed by Apple, as there was no App Store. The device didn't even have 3G and users had to make do with the EDGE network provided by AT&T.

In November 2007, the device arrived in the United Kingdom, France and Germany, and in October 2008, Austria and Ireland. Apple has released eight different iPhone models to date: iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C.

Currently, the iPhone is one of the best-selling smartphones on the market, along with Samsung's Galaxy S line devices. By March of this year, 500 million iPhones had been sold around the world.
