Samsung announces first SSD with 3D flash memory

Samsung has announced a very interesting news for consumers around the world. This is the Samsung 850 Pro solid state drive (SSD), which is the world's first device to use 3D V-NAND Flash memory. According to the manufacturer, this memory “breaks the scaling limits of existing models”, allowing the vertical deposition of electronic cells.

This means that the Flash memories present in the SSD are no longer deposited on a flat plate, but are distributed in different layers (between 24 and 32 in total) to make the distribution three-dimensional — occurring both vertically and horizontally. According to hardware experts from the HotHardware website, the device achieves very interesting and competitive results.

With more layers of storage, Samsung promises greater capacities in small spaces. For now, the limit for SSDs is 1 TB, but it is quite possible that this value will be increased soon — as memories will offer higher densities over the next few years. There is no official release date for the product yet, but Samsung already has the suggested price list:

Pricing (US): Samsung 850 Pro

  • 128 GB: US$ 129.99
  • 256 GB: US$ 229.99
  • 512 GB: US$ 429.99
  • 1 TB: US$ 729.99

Samsung seems to believe a lot in the success of these devices. The 3D V-NAND technology is one of the manufacturer's big bets for the computer market — showing that the world of laptops is not its only focus. One of the biggest proofs of this is the warranty offered for each Samsung 850 Pro, as they will hit the US market with 10 years of support.
