This is the coolest demo I've ever seen of cars driving themselves.

If Volvo had to turn to Van Damme in order to sell more trucks, Hyundai is betting on this crazy demo of self-driving cars to advertise its vehicles.

A group of stuntmen jump off the roof of moving cars, leaving them to drive themselves. It's impressive to see the cars driving and braking without a driver:

The idea is to show how three Genesis 2015 technologies work:

– “cruise control”, which automatically adjusts the speed of the car, based on the distance between it and the vehicle in front. Hyundai says it can even “come to a complete stop and then start again without driver intervention”;

– the automatic braking system, which uses sensors (camera and radar) to measure the distance and speed of the car ahead, and is able to automatically stop if a collision is imminent;

– the LKAS system, which automatically keeps the vehicle in the lane if it is leaving the lane.

The manufacturer recalls, however, that all this was designed to be used only on highways, and never in heavy traffic conditions or bad weather (rain, for example). All serve only to assist – not replace – defensive driving.

These technologies have been around for some time in other vehicles, but this is the first time we've seen such an audacious demonstration of how they work. Maybe it's the first step towards fully autonomous cars like Google's.
